Music makes the world go ‘round, so goes the saying. Such couldn’t be more true of Wilmington’s many local venues, which are prepping for another week of croons and tunes, all to alleviate the doldrums of our often hectic workloads and familial obligations. Here are our picks this week for music; allow yourself a night off to enjoy it.

Wednesday, May 7th
Bobaflex, w/Silver Judas, The Bangkok Five and All Lines Parallel
Lucky’s Pub, $8-$10

Hailing from Point Pleasant, West Virginia, tonight Bobaflex will be coming to local rawk haven Lucky’s to showcase their moody, raw music that takes on the stigmas and problems of working-class America in all of its blue-collar and even redneck glory. Having toured with the likes of Mudvayne on the Megadeath Gigantour, Bobaflex has had a heaping dose of heartache in maintaining solid band status. Yet, their perseverance has led to the release of Tales From Dirt Town, an album that will speak to small-town rock lovers.

Thursday, May 8th
Will West
Hell’s Kitchen, no cover

Will West is NC born and bred but has been transplanted to Portland, Oregon, only to find a sound in acoustic Americana that keeps him traveling from sea to shining sea armed with his guitar. While his vocals are softly enchanting, they provide a soothing backdrop of folk as shown on his two releases, Reconstruction and Shine—both of which will be available at his show.

Friday, May 9th
Quarter Roy
Palm Room, cover charge

Blending funk, jazz and rock into a smooth sound is the Quarter Roy experience that so many locals—hippies and hipsters alike—have come to adore of this local outfit. Playing a heady mix of covers and originals, the quartet always provide a laid-back vibe that makes a Friday at Wrightsville Beach well-spent.
Encore’s very own Adrian Varnam hailed them “a relatively new band that have become veterans of the North Carolina road.” Be a part of their excursion this weekend.

Saturday, May 10th
Snake Oil Medicine Show,
Hoots and Hellmouth
Soapbox Laundro Lounge, $10-$12

Asheville, North Carolina, has birthed one of the most eclectic bands to come out of the South in quite some time. Known as Snake Oil Medicine Show, the sextet stands out thanks to the quirky vocals of Carolina Pond and the mesh of sound encapsulated by the band and spanning everything from bluegrass to polka, jazz to reggae. They radiate positive vibes, proving that color isn’t only a visual comfort but an audial one, too. Mountaineers like these are ones to put in the back pocket and hold onto forever. They just make life so darn fun, a la live painters who join them onstage, creating characters to the backdrop of their theatrical hillbilly sound.
